Expert Translators on Staff

Expert translators are translators specializing in a certain subject matter. Unlike a ‘generalist translator,’ an expert translator usually works in a single ‘vertical.’

Some examples of expert translators:

  • medical translator
  • technical translator
  • business translator
  • legal translator
  • IT translator
  • education translator
  • government translator
  • nonprofit translator

Our Expert Translators Certifications

Expert translators must have some kind of certification. A translator certification may come from a variety of organizations. Our company and most American translators are members of the American Translators Association, the largest translator’s association in the World.

Organizations outside the United States are also common, and their certifications may be as valuable as those issued within the US as long as the organization is serious and recognized by other organizations.

Expert Translator Education

The education of the expert translator is a controversial subject. While some translation companies will require that the translator has formal education in their field (e.g., a translator translating engineering documents should also be an engineer), most translation companies will require only substantial experience in their field.

Aside from formal education in the area in which they specialize, formal education in language translation programs is also a big plus. Formal education in translation helps expert translators fine-tune their language skills while improving on quality control, terminology management, and other important aspects of the translation business.

Compensation of the Expert Translator

It may be counter-intuitive for some that expert translators will regularly decline translation assignments in “easy fields” outside their specialties. By focusing on their specialties, expert translators can keep their knowledge up-to-date and command substantially higher ‘per-word’ rates for their work.

Therefore, by being picky about the work they accept, they are increasing both the job volume and per-word compensation for their work. That’s why expert translators experience an average income of up to twice the earnings of those not specializing in a single vertical.

How to Choose the Right Expert Translator

Choosing the right translator for your needs is our job. Certifications, education, and experience alone are not enough to tell which translator is ideal for your project. In our experience, there are other factors important such as personality, flexibility, and past performance on similar projects.

Count on our decades-long experience to get the right expert translators for your translation project.
