THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS

Look at the verb structures in black. They describe something that is happening as the sentence is being spoken:


Aqui está fazendo muito calor!

(It’s very hot here!)


Aqui está fazendo muito frio!

(it’s very cold here!)

Os meninos estA?o tomando chocolate quente.

(The boys are having some hot chocolate.)

Estou trabalhando em casa.
(I’m working at home.)


Estamos indo para o hotel.

(We are going to the hotel.)

Estamos aprendendo bastante!
(We are learning a lot!)


As crianA§as estA?o gritando.

(The children are screaming.)

In Portuguese, the PRESENT CONTINUOUS tense requires:

The verb ESTAR+ a verb in the GERUND form
(conjugated according to the subject)

e.g.: Estou escovando os dentes (Eu)
…….. I’m brushing my teeth.

Estamos andando na avenida paulista (Nós)
….. We’re walking on Paulista Avenue.

Está chovendo (no subject)
…… It?s rainning.

Ele está dirigindo e falando ao celular
…… He’s driving and talking on his cell phone.

EstA?o rindo da minha cara? (vocA?s, eles, elas)
….. Are they laughing at me?

Elas estA?o assistindo a novela
….. They are watching the soap opera.
