Program Description

DEPARTMENTAL CERTIFICATE IN SPANISH TRANSLATION

The certificate in Spanish translation provides a course of study that prepares the student in the special skills involved in the role of translator. The award of the certificate provides evidence of practical competence in translating written texts toor from Spanish; interpretation of spoken Spanish is not involved. There are four required translation courses that must be satisfactorily completed, following which students may take a demanding final proficiency examination. Satisfactory performance on the examination entitles the student to receive the certificate in translation. Those students whose performance is judged only adequate may receive credit for completing the course sequence, but will not be awarded the certificate. The certificate requires 12 s.h. credit as follows:

Intermediate Translation

Advanced Translation I

Advanced Translation II

DEPARTMENTAL GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN HISPANIC STUDIES

The graduate certificate in Hispanic Studiesprovides students with opportunities to developadvanced/superior Spanish language skills as well asto deepen their understanding of Hispanic cultures,including their literatures. No particularconfiguration of courses is required. Thecertificate is flexible enough to allow students todesign, in consultation with the programcoordinator, a program to suit their personal andprofessional needs. The certificate requires 18 s.h. of credit, 12 of which must be at the 6000-level,chosen from the following courses:

Advanced Translation I

Advanced Translation II

Advanced Language Skills I

Advanced Language Skills II

Spanish Linguistics

Culture Studies:

Contemporary Issues of the Hispanic World

Hispanic Cinema

Cultural Studies, Spain

Cultural Studies of Spanish America

Literature:

Hispanic Women Writers . May be repeated for maximumof 6 s.h. with change of topic. May not be repeatedfor credit by students in WOST program. P: Consentof dept chair

Both programs offered by the East Carolina University are introductory courses totranslation, providing the students with an overviewof the translation profession and with evidence ofpractical experience translating texts from and toSpanish. The Graduate Certificate in Spanish Studiesalso comprises many Hispanic cultural aspects andSpanish Linguistics, knowledge which is very usefulfor a translator.
